WordPress classifies the information in pages and posts. The pages have information that doesn't change in time like the contact page or the about us page. The posts are your articles and they have the advantage that your visitors can comment and share their opinions about them.
The procedure to create a page and a post is almost the same. The only difference is that you choose Post or Page at the beginning of the process. To create a new post or a new page follow these steps:
- Go to Post or Pages
- Click "Add New"
- Write a title, something that is representative of the article.
- Write your content.
- Click "Publish"
- Click "Preview" to see your article.
- If you want to change something do it and click "update".
When you write your article you will see two tabs: Visual and HTML. HTML is useful when you copy scripts in HTML like videos, iframes or other information from the web. Even some plugins ask that you write something in this tab. Take care not to switch from visual to HTML mode because somethimes the script could end up not working properly and you will have to begin your work from zero.
For SEO purposes, you should change the permalinks of your site to obtain something like www.mydomain.com/myarticle instead of www.mydomain.com/?p234. The following change is going to help search engines find your post or page:
- Go to Settings
- Go to Permalinks
- Go to Custom Structure
- Write the following code: " /%category%/%postname%/", as shown in the image below.
- And that all.
The post can be classified by categories, this is going to help organize the structure of your site and your visitors are going to appreciate it. For exemple, in my blog about immigrants I choose a category about history, so all the posts about Canada's history are going to be found under this category.
To find inspiration about what you are going to write about you can use your knowledge of a particular subject. In my case I use my experience as an immigrant to write in my blog, and in the current blog I use my knowledge about wordpress, e-business and so on.
If you are not an expert, just perform a keyword search on the Intenet about your subject. You don't need to recopy data, but you can give your opinion about an article that you have read, it's that simple. You can find more information in libraries, books, videos, podcasts, etc...
Finally, to add more impact to your article you can add some photos, videos or even music. But pay attention to where you pick this material, make sure that it's legal to publish it in your blog.
You can find public rights images on these sites: Fotolia.com and freedigitalphotos.com. The last one asks that you give them credit for the pictures. If you don't want to do that, just buy the pictures and save yourself problems.
For videos, you can use youtube.com.
In the next article I will give some ideas on how to generate traffic to your site.
